What Makes Goldfish Swim School Golden?

Growing up in a small town I got accustomed to pretty much knowing everyone and always getting a neighborly smile and chat with anyone in town I came across. I moved to Michigan 17 years ago and over time I adjusted to living in a metro area where everyone wasn’t as open and friendly. In the beginning it bothered me a lot. It’s kinda sad that I’ve gotten use to it. I’ve recently come across some of that small town goodness again and I’ve realized that’s what makes Goldfish Swim School golden.

This post was done in partnership with Goldfish Swim School. All opinions are 100% my own and are not influenced in any way.

Every week when we walk into Goldfish Swim School we are immediately greeted with a friendly smile and a welcoming “hello!”. Most weeks we are greeted by a man named Steve. Steve’s energy is infectious. He seems like one of those people that it’s impossible to be sad or negative around. Yes, the kind of person we need more of in this world. He has a great rapport with the kids and is often seen giving them high fives. They love him! We appreciate his positive energy and it’s part of what makes Goldfish Swim School golden – their employees.

Interviewing Steve at Goldfish Swim School

Golden Employees

Steve graciously answered some questions that I put together so we could learn more about him. I threw in some fun questions that were more for the kids but his answers were incredible and definitely admirable.

April: What is your position at GSS?

Steve: There’s a technical name for my position, but I prefer to act as a “conduit for Golden Experiences”. You’ll likely find me stationed behind the desk, though.

April: What do you enjoy most about your job? Least?

Steve: Enjoy most? Easy! Kiddos. They are like a window into our past selves, revealing to us so many forgotten dreams and imaginings. I truly enjoy the presence of the kids here.

Least? That’s a tough one.. probably when a family who I’ve bonded with moves their lesson time to a day that I don’t work! Helps me practice letting go, though. And often enough, they come back 😉
April: How did you get involved in the swimming world?

Coincidence. Or divine timing. All a matter of perspective. A position here at Goldfish Clarkston opened up as I was seeking new, creative avenues to share my energy. It was a perfect opportunity!
April: What do you enjoy outside of GSS

Steve: Breathing. I’m not being flippant, breathing is my favorite thing in the world to do. How often do we take that aspect of life for granted?

Also, I play a few instruments. Music is a fundamental part of me, and I am ever composing new pieces to add to the global symphony.

April: What advice do you have for new GSS parents?

Steve: Leave your expectations at the door. Your child’s day to day experience will be unique, maybe some laughs and some cries. If you expect problems or difficulties because your child has been fearful or anxious, and you bring those expectations here, you’ll have a hard time seeing the larger picture we are all developing. *Trust the process, it is a beautiful thing to witness.*

April: If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Steve: To recognize all of the super powers in the people close to me. It’s not always as easy as it sounds! Try it!
April: If you could be an animated character, who would you be?

Steve: I wouldn’t mind being Woodstock. He lives a fine life.
April: You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Steve: Hmm… I suppose I’d be a crayon eraser. I mean, we all deserve a second chance now and again.
April: How often do you swim?
Steve: Every Wednesday.

April: If you were the owner/CEO or GSS, would you change anything?

Steve: All of our staff are all actively changing Goldfish every day. Fresh ideas and positive energy lend themselves to some amazing developments here. I strongly recommend anybody who hasn’t experienced Goldfish in Clarkston to come check us out!

Steve is great, isn’t he?! You can feel his energy just by reading his answers. Someone once told me if you love the company you work for you’ll act as if you are the owner. I get that from Steve for sure.  Although he caught me off guard with some of his answers, they were incredible! I never expected to be reminded of things like enjoying breathing and everyone deserving second chances. I just love how he looks at life. He truly is a person we need more of in this world, not only on the outside with his warm greetings and high fives but also on the inside with his positive outlook on life.

What makes Goldfish Swim School golden? You can see from this interview that one thing definitely is their employees. We’ve experienced so much good with the people there and we are thankful for the experience of working with them.

Thanks, Steve for brightening so many days!
