A Twist on Popcorn – Chocolate Banana Chip Popcorn

My family loves popcorn. The kids are always trying to create new types of popcorn but they are typically always wanting to add “treats” like candies or sprinkles. I remember years ago one of my favorite combinations was popcorn, chips and chocolate candies. I know, not the healthiest snack. When Barleans revealed our newest challenge last month I was incredibly excited! I have been a huge fan of their Butter Flavored Coconut Oil for months. A challenge to create delicious popcorn recipe using it? YES, PLEASE!

If you remember the last Barleans challenge, I incorporated bananas and flax seed into oatmeal. This challenge, bananas again. Bananas are one of my favorite fruits so I thought it would be fun to add them to popcorn!

Chocolate Banana Chip Popcorn

This is super easy to make and the taste is bold and satisfying! Barleans sent two jars of their Butter Flavored Coconut Oil, a Lékué popcorn maker and some organic popcorn kernels to get us started with this challenge. From there it was up to us to create a popcorn recipe.


I chose to add dark chocolate and dried bananas. YUM! Here’s how I made it in less than 10 minutes:

Add 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels to the bottom of the Lékué popcorn maker.

add salt to popcorn

Add 1 tsp salt (more or less to taste) to your kernels.


Add 1 tbsp of Barlean’s Butter Flavored Coconut Oil on top. I stirred it at this point to make sure all kernels were covered.

I then put the Lékué popcorn maker in the microwave for 3 minutes. This time can vary depending on your microwave. It’s best to listen for a long pause in the popping to determine the time to remove it from the microwave.


I put the popcorn in a dish and added the dried bananas throughout.


Next it was time to melt the dark chocolate morsels. I added 1/2 tsp of the Butter Flavored Coconut Oil and microwaved for a minute and then stirred.

The chocolate was then drizzled over the popcorn/banana chip mixture and refrigerated for 10 minutes to harden. Eat immediately for best results!


The finished product looks quite tasty, doesn’t it!?

  1. 1/3 cup popcorn kernels
  2. 1 tsp salt
  3. 1 tbsp Barleans Butter Flavored Coconut Oil
  4. 1/2 cup dried banana chips (more of less to taste)
For the Drizzle
  1. 1 tsp Barleans Butter Flavored Coconut Oil
  2. 1/4 cup dark chocolate morsels
  1. Add popcorn to Lékué popcorn maker.
  2. Top with Salt.
  3. Drizzle with Barlean's Butter Flavored Coconut Oil.
  4. Microwave for approximately 3 minutes.
  5. Remove and place popcorn in a bowl.
  6. Top with banana chips.
For the Drizzle
  1. Mix 1 tsp Barlean's Butter Flavored Coconut Oil to 1/4 cup chocolate morsels.
  2. Microwave for about 1 minutes and then stir.
  3. Drizzle on top of popcorn/banana chip mixture.
  4. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.
  5. Enjoy!
