Earth Day Changes – 3 Ways to Go Green in the Bathroom

Earth Day is quickly approaching. Every year I have people ask me what are some things they can do to be more green. I love giving suggestions on making small changes because those are the ones people are likely to stick with. As busy as we have become in our every day lives it’s hard to add new habits. Things that don’t take much effort and are easy to add to our daily routines get my vote, too. Over the past 7 years I’ve made small changes one at a time. I’ve worked on one room of the house at a time and here are some super simple tips you can do to go green in the bathroom.

3 Ways to Go Green in the Bathroom

The bathroom is typically the smallest room in the house. How many things can you possibly change in the bathroom? Believe it or not there are several but today we are going to just touch on 3 things that take very little effort. These are some of the things I did when I first started my journey and was easily able to stick to. This year we are even adding one more thing!

DIY All Purpose Cleaner

DIY All Purpose Cleaner

Store bought bathroom cleaners contain so many chemicals. It’s crazy to read the labels. I started making my own cleaners some time ago and I couldn’t be happier. This is one of my favorites to use in the bathroom: a DIY All Purpose Cleaner that’s super easy to make!

1/2 c. White Vinegar
2 Tbsp. Baking Soda
2 drops of Essential Oil
Spray Bottle

First, put the baking soda into the spray bottle. Next, slowly pour in the white vinegar. It will bubble so make sure you add it slowly so it doesn’t spill. Add a few drops of your chosen essential oil (I use lemon oil) and then put the lid on and swirl it together. Open the container back up and add water to fill the bottle. Swirl again until mixed thoroughly. That’s it, you are ready to do some cleaning now!

Use Hand Towels

My parents never used paper towels in the bathroom. We always used hand towels when I was growing up. Once I got my own place I guess I found it easier to use paper towels in the bathroom to dry my hands, to wipe things up, etc. They are convenient to grab and easy to just toss and forget about. It’s a super easy change to remove those paper towels from your bathroom and just use regular hand towels. It’ll save a lot of trash and hand towels feel so much better on your hands!

I’m a numbers person and I love hearing statistical information but when I heard that each year over 17 billion toilet paper tubes are tossed I was shocked. That’s a HUGE number. Yes, some of them are recycled or used in classroom products (trust me, I know…hubby is a teacher and has used them in his classroom) but the majority are tossed out. One of the easiest changes you can make in the bathroom is to #TossTheTube with Scott® Tube-Free toilet paper.
