Get Animated with Inside Out #InsideOutEvent

I was provided with an all expense paid trip to bring you the details about this movie and others. All opinions are 100% my own and are not influenced in any way.

When I was in San Francisco learning all about Inside Out I got to witness a mock “animation dailies” session with Supervising Animators Shawn Krause & Victor Navone, Directing Animator Jamie Roe and Story Artist Tony Fucile. This was such a fun session! I can’t even begin to express how unique and inspiring the entire Pixar community is!

Animation dailies are meetings held to look at each others work and share ideas to improve and the director either approves shots or makes notes on shots. It’s a 9am meeting every day to get the day going, to see what everyone is working on and to get inspired! The meetings are held in a small theater type room with comfy theater seats!

Tony Fucile was a sketch artist for Inside Out and he would sit in the dailies and collect notes and visualize them for the animator with the above tool. It’s a piece of tracing paper that allows him to make changes/suggestions for the animator to take back to their desks. While they are discussing the changes Tony’s work is shown on the “big screen”. Tony looks at things that many might not notice but it really contributes to the feel of the movie! He notices things like a shoulder should be higher, a wise crack should be higher on a character’s mouth and more! It’s all of the little details that contribute to an amazing final product.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Tony Fucile is a voice artist, too?! He’s voiced a few characters over the years!

We were able to watch a clip from one of their collaborative meetings to see just what they do. Anyone is free to speak up during dailies and give their thoughts and ideas. Once they have these ideas, the animators take the information back to their desk to improve the scene more and then when they are ready they bring it to another daily session. During their daily meeting they typically work through about 15-20 shots per session. When the director says “Let’s final it” that means the shot has been approved!

Fun fact: One of the clips we viewed was about 5 seconds long and it took an animator about three weeks to do! The animators average about 3 seconds of finished footage per week!

It was an honor to take part in this mock daily session. The animators truly are gifted and such fun to chat with! It’s amazing the details of the work that goes into a film.

You don’t want to miss this movie! A lot of work has gone into it and it shows. It’s truly amazing and is a film so many can relate to.
