Do I live a 100% green life? No. My goal in going green is to make small changes, to inspire others to make small changes and together we can all make a big difference. Every April, since it is Earth Month, I reevaluate my green choices and make new goals of small things I can change. For my household, it’s been easy to do one-two small things at a time. Recently, I decided I needed some ecofriendly bathroom solutions. It wasn’t as difficult as it might sound. It is one small room and making multiple easy changes make it a much healthier place for my family.
Ecofriendly Bathroom Solutions
When I went into our bathroom to decide where I could make some changes the first thing that screamed out to me was the paper towels for drying hands. Paper towels are very easy and quick when you have a big family to care for but they are definitely not ecofriendly. I decided that even though using hand towels would create a bit more laundry it was worth it to get rid of all of the paper towels. Not only would we be making an ecofriendly change, but we would also be saving money on our trips to the grocery store as we would not need to purchase the paper towels!
Now I thought about the extra bit of laundry with the hand towels and discovered a very easy way to just exchange some laundry instead of adding to it. I decided that we would use reusable sponge cleaners to wash with instead of wash cloths! That, in addition to our organic soap to wash with, was yet another easy ecofriendly bathroom solution!
Natural Goodness from Tom’s of Maine
Next, I thought of all of the unnecessary chemicals in our bathroom. I’ve tossed out all of the cleaners that are not natural and chemical free. With little ones, it’s just not worth the risk. I use a chemical free cleaner made with essential oils. You can find the recipe here. Not only did I need to change our cleaning products but I needed to change some of our personal hygiene products as well. Changing to an aluminum free deodorant permanently has been on my list of things to do. I went to my local Walmart in search of some things, such as toothpaste and deodorant, that would be much healthier for us.
I was pleased to come across Tom’s of Maine products right there in the personal care aisle! They have toothpaste for kids and adults, as well as a unisex deodorant that is aluminum free! SCORE! Ecofriendly bathroom solutions were proving to be much easier than expected! By the way, you can click here to get $1.00 off any Tom’s of Maine product purchase at Walmart! Save some green while going green! 😉
Tom’s of Maine Unisex Long Lasting Apricot Deodorant smells great and is just what I’ve been wanting since it’s aluminum free! With it being a unisex deodorant, hubby and I can both use Tom’s and be chemical free and fresh!
DIY Chemical Free Lotion
Finally, I decided that I want to start making more of our body products to ensure they are chemical free. My daughter suffers from eczema and I truly believe that many products found in stores can contribute to eczema flair ups. We started using a lotion I made with essential oils and coconut oil and her eczema has really improved.
1/2 cup Organic Coconut Oil
20 drops of Melrose Essential Oil
20 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
5 drops of Melaleuca Alternifolia
There is no need to melt the coconut oil down, simply combine all ingredients in a bowl and whip until smooth. That’s it! It’s a chemical free lotion that will work wonders with dry skin!
Once I got started on our ecofriendly bathroom solutions it came more naturally than I thought. Small changes are great ways to celebrate Earth Month! Pick a room and make a list of all of the changes you can make and then if it’s overwhelming, simply do 1-2 a week or a month.
This is how I’ve made our bathroom ecofriendly, what changes will you be making to celebrate Earth Month?
