The Ideal Child Book Series for Inquisitive Toddlers: Guess Who

Our four year old son is going through a very inquisitive stage. He wants to know everything, which gives us the perfect opportunity to quiz him and make sure he’s retaining everything he’s asking! We recently received  some books for review that were perfect for this stage and keeps our little guy’s mind going! Best of all, it’s a child book series that can keep his interest over time! The Guess Who series is written by Howard Eisenberg and includes the titles: Guess Who Zoo, Guess Who Farm and Guess Who Neighborhood.

Guess Who Zoo Child Book Series

The first Guess Who Zoo poems that Mr. Eisenberg wrote weren’t meant to be a book at all. They were just amusing post card poems penned at 30,000 feet to entertain his grandchildren (and himself) in 1989 while accompanying his wife, Arlene, on a What to Expect book tour of Australia and New Zealand. Let me tell you, these poems were a creative and fun way for them to keep busy!

Not only are these entertaining for my 2 and 4 year olds, but I enjoy them! I have fun reading them and acting out various parts of the book by making my voice “sound” like certain things the book is describing. These books really are fun books to get in to and make imaginations come out! We try to pick books that will make our kids think, that will serve as an educational tool and will allow them to have fun as kids, too. This is the perfect child book series for all of that!

Guess Who Farm Child Book SeriesFrom the press release:

Eisenberg’s previous six books were for adults. This trio, accidentally born on that overseas flight, are designed for children 3-6 as “fun that educates” —  encouraging vocabulary building and reading and writing skills as well as introductions to science, social studies, and the arts. The books begin with charming rhymed stories followed by whimsical interactive poems with clues in every line and the last word – usually the animal’s name – left blank. Two of the books are augmented by a fascinating-facts section entitled If Animals Could Talk.

Just to give you an example of how fun these books are, here’s a sample from the book:

A Sample From the Guess Who Zoo:

MY COAT IS BRIGHT AND SPECKLED
MY FAVORITE LUNCH IS LEAVES
I DAINTILY NIBBLE DOWN BELOW
OR HIGH ON THE TALLEST TREES.

MY NECK IS AS LONG AS A LIGHT POLE
IT MAKES LITTLE CHILDREN LAUGH
WHEN I STRETCH IT OUT TO LICK  YOUR HAND
YOU’LL KNOW I’M THE _________.

Cute, isn’t it!? These stories really are so much fun for my little ones. We love reading them and guessing what is being described!

The Guess Who Child Book Series I would highly recommend these books for the older toddlers in your life. They’ll have plenty of fun, laughter and education all from this amazing child book series! I would love to see this series continued with something like Guess Who School for kids going to Kindergarten, Guess Who Vacation for kids to celebrate upcoming vacations, and Guess Who Baby to read to a soon-to-be sibling to understand what items the new baby will use!
