Staying Healthy During the Peak Month for Illness

With baby due literally any day now I have turned into an obsessed mama when it comes to keeping germs at bay. With two toddlers in daycare and a husband who teaches children all day there is plenty of exposure going on and the last thing we need right now is any kind of illness. Lysol® recently sent us some items and challenged us to stay healthy! What a great challenge, right!?

Cold and flu viruses can be spread easily from person to person in many ways! They can be spread through direct contact (shaking hands), indirect contact (touching a surface someone else who was sick touched), through the air (sneezing), through contaminated food and water and they can even be spread through contact with animals or by bite or scratch. Because there are so many ways these germs can spread we have to be very careful about how we prevent these germs, especially at the peak of cold and flu season.

February is the peak month for cold and flu season, so how are we keeping germs at bay?

Lysol for Germs
Did you know that cleaning and disinfecting aren’t one in the same? Cleaning only removes germs from surfaces, whereas disinfecting actually destroys them. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) The flu virus can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, so it’s important to disinfect regularly.

Tips for Staying Healthy During Cold and Flu Season

  • With two toddlers, we have to be extra careful. Did you know that children can touch and retouch more than 300 surfaces in just 30 minutes? Imagine how much you could protect them – and prevent them from spreading germs – by switching from cleaning to disinfecting! (CDC)
  • Lysol® Disinfectant Spray and wipes will help keep your family thriving and healthy year round by helping to prevent the spread of germs. Lysol® Disinfectant Spray is designed to kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria on hard surfaces. Cleaning with soap and water removes dirt, however, disinfecting kills germs on surfaces, providing additional protection for your family.
  • Frequent hand washing is a key way to preventing cold and flu. However, one study found that the majority of respondents (53%) only wash their hands for 10 seconds or less after using the toilet when the optimal time for washing is 20 seconds. (Global  Hygiene Council) So….wash those hands for 20+ seconds regularly!
  • Frequently spraying Lysol® Disinfectant Spray on hard, commonly touched surfaces such as doorknobs, sink faucets, toilet seats, remote controllers, keyboards and phones, as well as on fabric and in the air can help prevent the spread of viruses like cold & flu.

Lysol® has been a trusted leader in the field of health and hygiene for more than 100 years. One of our favorite Lysol products is the Lysol® Disinfecting Wipes. We can easily clean doorknobs and baby gates with the wipes as well as other often touched items around the house!

So What Changes Have We Make for Staying Healthy?

In the recent weeks, while preparing for baby’s arrival, we’ve put a lot more effort into staying healthy. We clean multiple times per day with Lysol® Disinfecting Wipes. We use the wipes to clean faucets, toilet flush handles, counter tops, fridge handles, light switches, baby gates and door knobs especially! We’ve also changed to the Lysol® No Touch Hand Soap System and wash our hands many, many times daily! So far, so good….baby will be here any day and we are hoping our household remains healthy because of our efforts with Lysol®!

Thank you, Lysol® for keeping our home healthy!
