We’re Starting a Terracycle Brigade at School!

Capri Sun Disclosure

I’ve mentioned before that my husband is a teacher. We are both very passionate about helping his students succeed and we are both very passionate about recycling. We’ve often talked about what we can do to raise more awareness about the need for recycling and we both agree that it needs to not only come from home, but from schooling also. We were recently awarded the opportunity to start a TerraCycle Brigade with Capri Sun that was the answer to our prayers on getting something started in school for not only my husband’s students, but for the whole school!

TerraCycle Brigade

Capri SunIf you aren’t familiar with TerraCycle it is time to familiarize yourself and spread the word! TerraCycle is a highly-awarded, international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products. TerraCycle is widely considered the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable, post-consumer waste.

TerraCycle works with more than 100 major brands in the U.S. and 22 countries overseas to collect used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for landfills. It repurposes that waste into new, innovative materials and products that are available online and through major retailers.

We recycle as much as we can in our home. We, of course, get the most recycling from our kitchen. We recycle milk and juice containers, boxes from foods, egg cartons, and more! We also recycle newspapers and all of the boxes that are delivered to our house, mostly for reviews or blogging purposes. We are always looking for ways to reuse items and often wonder what can be done with those items that we can’t recycle. After having LA over three years ago we became aware of the need for change in this world and one of those things was the need to recycle. Our passion for recycling and spreading the word about it’s importance has grown tremendously over the past three years.

We try to make a difference by being role models in our own actions. We educate any of our friends and family on the need to recycle and help them find places locally they can take their recyclables if they don’t have local pick up. We help them learn just how easy it is to recycle and make sure they understand they don’t have to recycle every item that goes through their home because every one item can make a difference. We’ve worked with our church and I’ve worked with my employer in getting small recycling projects started. We volunteer at my husband’s school and have talked with students about recycling and making changes. Recycling is a passion for us.

We truly believe every small change will and does make a differences.

Education is the answer in our minds. We believe the more you education someone about an issue the more they are likely to help make a difference. When is the best time to start a habit? In childhood. We all know the earlier we start habits, the more likely they are to become habits over a lifetime. We have been tremendously blessed in working with my husband’s students each year. They always teach us something and we hope we are able to leave a positive influence on them. My husband’s passion for teaching has also become my passion, especially in teaching others about small changes that can be made to make big differences.

We’ve really brainstormed over the past week on just how we are going to start this TerraCycle Brigade and just what items we will award to the school. I’m sure you are well aware of the cuts made to public schools and there is such a need for so many basic items in public school these days that I am beyond elated to be able to start this program, educate the children and help provide some items to further their educations that they wouldn’t have had without this program.

Capri Sun Varieties

Our TerraCycle program will involve several products. The first item we will be collecting is drink pouches such as Capri Sun and Honest Kids pouches. We will also collect candy wrappers and snack bags to contribute to various brigades! We plan on setting up a display right inside of the door at school to remind kids daily of the need to contribute! We will also send fliers home asking for the help of parents in this effort. We’ll also put together an assembly at school to educate the students on why it is so important to take part in recycling and their efforts will be rewarded with new supplies to use at school!

Math Manipulatives

The school my husband teaches at is in need of reading level books, mathematics manipulatives and some sports equipment. Our goal is to collect 300 items in each category (drink pouches, snack bags and candy wrappers) and at the end of our one month goal we’ll award the school with various items they need for reading and math education along with sports equipment. We are thrilled to take part in this brigade and can’t thank Capri Sun and Collective Bias enough for supporting our efforts!

We’ll let you know how it’s going via social media throughout the effort as well as through a final blog post to give our results! Wish us luck and if you’d like to get involved and contribute, let me know!

Have you ever started a recycling program? What ideas do you have for starting one?

  1. This is such an amazing program! I’ve never heard of TerraCycle, but I definitely want to find more info now. My husband is a teacher too, and it would be fantastic to do something like this with his school. He recently switched jobs to a very “crunchy” school that teaches about gardening, composting, and other eco-friendly activities, so I’m willing to bet his students and families would be more than willing to contribute to a program like this. Nice work spreading the word about being green. 🙂
