Holiday Gift Guide – Hunter Fan’s Universal Internet Thermostat (Giveaway) #HGG

The 2012 Holiday Gift Guide continues with an amazing gift for the home from Hunter Fan! I had a hard time deciding whether to classify this as a gift for the home or as a gift for men because my husband LOVES this so much! I finally decided it would be best classified as a gift for the home because everyone benefits from this internet thermostat!
Gift Guide ButtonHunter Fan has a great selection of ceiling fans, portable fans, and bathroom fans. They also make air purifiers, humidifiers and unknown to me, Hunter Logothermostats! The company was started in the late 1800s by a father and son team who created the first water-driven ceiling fan in upstate New York. Today, they have offices in three countries and retail outlets worldwide! I was thrilled at the chance to review their Universal Internet Thermostat, mostly because my husband is obsessed with keeping the heat turned down when we aren’t home and if I am the last to leave in the morning there are many times I forget to turn the heat down! This wonderful tool allows him to check once he’s at work and make sure the temp is down! LOVE IT!

Hunter Internet Thermostat

The new Universal Internet Thermostat was released in October and is among one of the many, many things that you can now control from your Smartphone! you can control it in-home or wherever you are from your phone! This thermostat retails for only $99.99, and works with virtually all types of heating and cooling systems, features a 5 Minute Installation™ System with a plug and play internet gateway, runs on 4 AA batteries for up to one year and supports 24 Volt “C-Wire” operation. I decided to install the thermostat myself one day when my husband took the kids to see his parents. I had some work to do at home so I added this to my list and I was nervous to try something that affected our heat since it was cold outside! After looking over the instructions though it seemed incredibly simple and I knew I could do it. It literally took me less than 10 minutes. I think had I been more confident in what I was doing it would have definitely been that “5 minute installation” that Hunter Fan boasts about! It really was rather simple! After I completed installation I couldn’t wait to turn the circuit breaker back on to the furnace to see if my job had been successful. After a little waiting I saw that it was! WOOHOO!!!  I did it all by myself!

After my husband got home and double checked my job (I don’t think he could believe I did it and it worked!) he immediately went to work downloading the app from the iTunes App Store. The app can also be gotten from a web and mobile app on my.hunterfan.com for use with smartphones, tablets, laptops and PCs. It took him just a few minutes to figure it out and we were in business. The first three months of internet connectivity are free, as part a 100% risk-free trial. You can then opt to pay $9.99 a year for internet connectivity or pay a $49.99 one-time fee for product life-time internet connectivity.

We have not used the “Schedule” or the “Away” features, although I was not certain they would really be needed with the app and the ability to change it whenever you want from your phone until I saw the statistic that “Consumers can save an average of $180 a year using a programmable thermostat according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.” Yes, we’ll be working on getting these figured out! 🙂 I accidentally had the scheduled and away buttons on one night and didn’t realize the heat was set with a target temperature of 62 degrees! Whoa! I was VERY thankful for baby Addy’s monitor that has an alarm that goes off if her room gets to 68 degrees. The alarm on the baby monitor went off within an hour or so of us going to bed and I got up to see the heat was on 62!! We leave the scheduled and away buttons off and just adjust the temperature from the unit on the wall when we are at home and my husband adjusts it from his phone when we are away. In fact, it was amazing when we went out of town one weekend and he had adjusted the heat to be at 65 degrees while we were gone but an hour before we arrived home he turned up the temperature from his phone so it was nice and warm when we went inside with the kids! We LOVE being able to adjust the temperature while not at home! It’s SO convenient!

While we use the Universal Internet Thermostat to warm or cool our home before we come home from work, and save money by adjusting the heating & cooling equipment when we are traveling, this is also ideal if you have a vacation home you need to monitor or a parent’s home you’d like to help control.
