Tuesday’s Tastes on Second Base – Mastitis

This week we wanted to talk about something serious for the Tuesday’s Tastes on Second Base topic. We know it’s important to share all aspects of breastfeeding and to share what knowledge we do have and to support one another in topics that may arise. Although I’ve thankfully never dealt with mastitis, I have heard it can be a rather difficult part of the breastfeeding journey.

Mastitis is a breast infection in the tissue of the breast. The infection is usually caused by a common bacteria found on normal skin. The bacteria enter through a break or crack in the skin, usually on the nipple. The infection takes place in the fatty tissue of the breast and causes swelling. This swelling pushes on the milk ducts. The result is pain and lumps in the infected breast.

The symptoms of mastitis are breast swelling or lumps and pain. Women experiencing this problem can also develop a fever, itching and a breast discharge. I have heard that the pain associated with mastitis is extreme and you will know something is wrong. It won’t be a question. Something you can do to treat it at home is to apply moist heat to the infected breast for 15-20 minutes four times a day. You doctor can also prescribe an antibiotic to get rid of the infection.

As I mentioned earlier, I have been lucky in that I haven’t dealt with mastitis in any of my three breastfeeding journeys so I can’t give you a personal story. I did want to post information in case any of you are having problems with this and please, if you are reading this and have experienced problems we would love to hear your story. If you have a blog please link up with your story and tips. If you don’t have a blog please comment below and share your story and or tips.

After reading here, be sure to check out what Courtney at Joy of Momma Joyner had to say about this topic. Don’t forget to visit the others blogs on the linky for their thoughts and/or experiences, too! If you are a blogger and want to link up, you can get the InLinkz code!
