This week Courtney and I are discussing scheduled versus on-demand nursing. Which way do you nurse your baby? What are your opinions on each of these ways? We want to hear your thoughts too! Please be respectful of everyone’s opinion, as we are all aware that everyone has differences in the way they view things. If you have a blog, please link up! If not, please leave us a comment!
Well, if you’ve been around here, you know that I’ve nursed three babies. I am still nursing my third and all three have been nursed on-demand. I personally feel that baby will let me know when she’s hungry and as mama I need to feed her. It’s that simple for me. I understand everyone is different though and it doesn’t work the same for everyone. I would worry that if I did not feed on demand it would affect my milk supply because it wouldn’t be the supply/demand factor. I’ve also read that many mamas who do scheduled nursing end up supplementing and that is one of the last things I want to happen here. I also cannot imagine trying to sooth a newborn baby because it’s not time for him/her to eat yet. How do you tell/explain that to an infant that is hungry? I feel like that would be cruel. All of my children have fed on demand and it does “sorta” turn into a schedule though because they would typically eat every 2-3 hours. That’s as close to “scheduled” as we get though!
I never made them wait though if it wasn’t the 2-3 hours!
We’ve had great luck with nursing on demand. My little ones typically do wake up 1-2 times per night until about 9 months but I don’t have a problem with that. I’ve enjoyed that quiet, alone time with each of them. On-demand, that’s how we rock with the nursing. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
That’s it…my thoughts are pretty short this week.
What are your thoughts? Do you nurse on demand or on schedule? If you aren’t a nursing mama, what do you think you would do?

I agree with you, on demand just seems like the right way for us too. I can’t imagine telling an infant.. no you have to wait because its not time. Or how do you feed a baby when its time if they are not hungry. I know mine will not eat unless he is hungry.
