Debate with the Danielles – TVs in the Kids’ Room?

This is becoming a weekly post that I am enjoying! I hope you are too! 🙂 This week’s Debate with Danielle from Happenings of the Harper Household and Danielle from We Don’t Have It All Together, But Together We Have It All is about TVs in kids’ bedrooms. What do you think? Yay or Nay?

Friendly Debates with the Danielles

This very topic has been discussed among my husband and I numerous times. Our 16 year old has had a TV in his bedroom since he was about eleven. I gave in and gave him Television for Kidsan old TV when we got a newer one. He was our only child and he was spoiled. My husband has talked about wanting to get a TV in LA’s room and every time he mentions it  I tell him NO!! As in capital N, capital O!! NO WAY!  LA is TWO years old and just recently even started watching 30 minutes of TV on occasion, not even daily. My husband’s reason for wanting a TV in LA’s room is so HE can watch it when he’s in there. LAs room is for playing and for imagination. All too often these days kids don’t get the chance to develop their imaginations and use them because they are too busy with technology. There are iPads, iPhones, computers, video games…too much! There won’t be a TV going in LA’s room any time soon. And baby Addy can forget it, even longer for her since she’s two years behind LA!! LOL

Maybe my strong opinion on this comes from not having a TV in my room when I was a kid. I was forced to play outside and in my bedroom and use my imagination. I think it did a world of good for me. The only time I watched TV was Saturday morning when cartoons were on and my mama was cleaning the house.

So, there you have it, my opinion is NAY!! Kids should not have TVs in their rooms and I don’t think they should until they are teens…if then. Childhood is a time for using imagination and for playing, why take this away? What do you think? What are your thoughts? Be sure to visit both Danielles at the links above to read what they have to say and link up if you have a blog! Just remember to please respect everyone’s opinions and respect differences.

  1. I agree with you! I never had a Tv in my room and don’t think my son needs one either. I have friend who put a TV in her son’s room at 2 and he watches it in there all the time so they can have their TV time. Crazy!

  2. Danielle @ We Have It All says:

Haha I love that, “As in capital N, capital O!! NO WAY!” – I LOL’d when I read that! Anyway, I totally see your point. I’m really not sure how I feel about the little one’s having a tv in their room. I could probably go either way.

Thanks for linking up this week 🙂

  3. I definitely would not allow my children to have a tv in their room. It is to hard to censor what they watch, plus there is no need for them to have unlimited access

  4. not with the way TV is today – would not want to have a TV in a kid’s bedroom….

  5. Tammy Malfatti says:

None of my kids have a tv in their room. My son did when he was 13, but it created so many issues with homework that when we moved, his tv didn’t go back. My girls are too young for tv much less having one in their room. Maybe when they are 16 or so IF they are good students and have jobs to help pay for cable or movies or whatever it is they wanna watch. Maybe!

  6. Kiersten W. says:

No way. Any electronics/media (TV, computer, video games) are to be experienced in the company of an adult. I hate that I need the TV on just because it’s too quiet otherwise. I don’t want my kids to become dependent on it. I think instead, I am going to start turning the radio (or Pandora) on in the mornings so we can listen to music while we get ready.

  7. I had a tv in my room as a kid, but now that I am a parent I wouldn’t feel comfortable with it. Tv is so terrible these days it is too easy for little eyes to see things they shouldn’t. My mom always kept a close eye on what we were watching back then but today, even commercials can’t be trusted many times.
