Summer Fluffin’ Day 8 – Mix & Match: fitted, prefolds & covers

Welcome to week two of Summer Fluffin’! Wow, time sure is flying and before we know it, Summer Fluffin’ will be gone. 🙁 Today we are going to discuss fitteds, prefolds and covers. To be completely honest, I have been dreading the day that I would have to write this post. I have never used prefolds. I have used a fitted a few times and the only covers I have experience with are covers like Best Bottoms and GroVia. So, as you can tell I am not an expert in this area.

The fitted that we used was from Itti Bitti. I really don’t understand the fitteds because so many diapers have PUL on the outside and you don’t have to use a cover, so why do people use fitteds? I will admit the diaper did really well when it came to being absorbent. (Comment with “extra 720” three times for extra entries into any giveaway you’d like!) We even used the fitted and cover overnight and didn’t have any leaks. It was pretty trim too! Fitteds just didn’t work well for us. Call me lazy if you want, but I prefer not putting on two diapers. I would use this again overnight though if I needed some overnight options.
Prefolds and covers…I’ve never tried. When I first started looking into cloth diapering this type scared the living daylights out of me. They reminded me so much of what was used 30 years ago! In recent months I have branched out and used diapers other than AIOs. The more I do this the less the prefolds and covers scare me. Now, it just seems the prefolds and covers are like a pocket diapers without the pocket. 🙂  If presented the opportunity I can comfortably say I would be happy to try this type of diaper.
I have also seen that the pricing for prefold and covers can be the most economical way to cloth diaper. I slowly built my stash by buying a diaper here and there while I was still pregnant, however, if I were to buy a lot at one time, prefolds and covers would definitely be on my list of what to look into.
I want to talk a bit about the covers I do have. I currently have four GroVia shells and one Best Bottoms shell in my stash. I have found these to be helpful with the fitted diapers overnight. Both of these shells were tried and both passed the test – no leaks overnight. They work great with a fitted.
These are not my favorite types of diapers I do think, like everything else, that there is a right time to use them. With cloth, you just have to test, test, test and get the right system down for what works for your baby.

I have just pulled out my prefolds again (baby is 10 months) and have really been “enjoying” using them–no really. I have 6 Bummis organic prefolds and they work great. I love knowing there is a natural and organic fabric against my baby’s skin. These essentially work like an All-in-Two. In fact, I think Bummis has started calling their prefolds “prefold inserts”. You should contact them for a review. I’ve really loved their covers and prefolds. Worked great for newborn stage and, like I said, I’m loving them again now. 🙂

  3. I suppose we should be brave and try the prefolds again. I don’t think the ones I have would fit W now, but I was pondering they might work as good inserts maybe at night. I don’t know. I would love to get some use out of them with W instead of just waiting for another baby!

Great review. I love prefolds! I used them probably 70% of the time with my daughter. We used unbleached cotton as well as organic hemp prefolds. I found they were the best diaper to get a custom fit no matter what size your baby. Highly recommend using a snappi diaper fastener with the diaper to get the best fit.

I always recommend my customers who are new to cloth to try different brands and styles including prefolds.

i love my fitteds, prefolds & flats! when i first started looking into cloth, i swore up and down i would only use modern cloth. but during the day, i use the covers options a lot if the mood strikes!

I have never used prefolds, but I have read a lot more about them and have heard great reviews lately. It will be something that I may have to branch out into soon…at least to give it a try! I have heard that they are very trim, which I love. Sometimes the bulk of cloth diapers bums me out, because they interfere with some clothes. I just have to learn the different ways of folding, which I feel like could be difficult to get the hang of at first!
