Green Tip Tuesday – How Green Is Your Cookout?

This is a beautiful time of year here in Michigan and if you are anything like my husband and I, you love to cookout! I love it primarily because my husband is an awesome cook on the grill, but also because I get a break from cooking! 🙂 This year I started really thinking about our cooking out and wondering if there were ways we could be more green. I’d like to share some tips on making your cookout more green!

Green your cookout

The thing I read that was most common is the fact that the carbon footprint we are creating with our backyard BBQ is not that significant compared to what we do in our everyday lives (leaving the TV on or driving the car). Whew. That’s good, right? 🙂 It’s actually believed that grilling with gas or charcoal is making less of an impact on our environment than cooking in an electric stove that is powered by a coal burning power plant! Interesting, huh? Did you know that there are solar powered grills available? I REALLY want to get one for my husband! That would just be the neatest thing. It would be for him though, really! 🙂

Also when cooking out use reusable plates, cups, silverware, and napkins instead of paper plates and cups. It’s not the easiest way when you have dishes to clean up, I know, but it’s better for our environment. 🙂 If you have a large party and not enough dishes try to buy recycled plates and cups. They also have some available that are made from renewable resources such as corn and potato starch.

When it comes to the food, shop locally as it supports the local economy and it is transported less, creating less fossil fuels. Also try to buy organic to stay away from any pesticides. Buy foods from your local farmer’s market. Some of them even have meat! For dessert, try some grilled fruit! YUM!

When using bug sprays, be sure yours is DEET free! DEET is the main component in many bug repellents and is bad for your health and bad for the earth!

Cook outs are one of my favorite things about summer and it’s good to know we can work to make these events more green! Enjoy your summer full of cooking out! 🙂  Happy Tuesday!

We got a gas grill and it is very efficient. Also if it is hot out and we are running the a/c, we often use the gas grill instead of cooking on the stove, because it just heats up the kitchen and house, making the a/c work harder. Plus, we love stuff like grilled pizzas, which are done in no time! Beats all the time spent pre-heating the oven and then getting the kitchen heated up.
