Ways to Save on Electricity

We could all use a few reminders on how to save electricity. If you are new to going green you may be wondering how electricity can contribute to the environment. Let me see if I can answer that for you. Most of the time electricity is created by burning coal, which then turns the turbines and creates electricity. The more coal that is burned, the more greenhouse gases are produced. Greenhouse gases contribute to global warming. Too much greenhouse gas causes too much heat to be trapped on the earth and it can’t escape into space. When this occurs, ice caps begin to melt and in turn will cause floods. Floods can cause a whole chain of effects on our environment. I know there is a much larger story to that, but that’s just a small part of it to help you understand why greenhouse gases can be bad.

Here are some simple ways you can help save on electricity:

  • Cook on a lower temperature
  • Don’t preheat the oven, put your food in when you turn the oven on
  • Turn the lights off when you leave a room
  • Unplug appliances or other electrical items when not in use. If something is plugged in, it is still using electricity whether or not you are actually using the item.
  •  Thaw food before cooking it, it can save 15 minutes of cook time for each pound!
  • Use fans or ceiling fans as much as possible instead of air conditioning
  • Keep the dust cleaned off of the coils on the back of your refrigerator
  • Only wash clothes when you have a full load
  • Wash clothes in cold water
  • Have a family game night and don’t turn on the TV, stay in one room to avoid lights on all over the house
  • Hang your clothes outside instead of using the dryer

These are just a few small things that are super easy to do and if we all do them we can make a huge difference. Some of these things you can practice not only at home, but at work (if you work outside of the home). Several months ago I started paying attention  to how many lights are left on where I work. There are lights left all day in rooms that people go into MAYBE two times a day. That, to me, was absolutely ridiculous! You know if they were at home they wouldn’t leave the lights on that much because they would get the bill. I started turning lights out in every room I pass if there is no one in there. There are very few people that work after 5pm at my job and the hallways lights were never being turned off. I started turning those off at 5pm too! I am seriously on a mission, wherever I go, to make small changes that WILL make a difference. Please join me!
